Orchard House
The iconic packing sheds of Swanson and Oratia inspired the early concepts for this greenfield site in West Auckland. A central priority for the clients was enhancing both the physical and visual connections to the protected natural areas of the site.
Divided into two distinct building forms, the house is connected by the dining room and two deck areas. Private areas, including a family lounge and bedrooms, are located on the south wing and the more public entry, kitchen and lounge. The dining area, with bi-folding doors opening out on both the eastern and western facades, create flexible entertainment options when westerly winds push through the site. Three large native trees form the focal point for the main living and kitchen areas and are framed by the client-designed truss. Native planting around the building helps to re-establish the site and conceal the on-site services.
